Your Metabolism Isn’t Broken. It’s Unmeasured.
By the time someone brings this up with us, they’ve usually already decided what the problem is. They’ve been eating carefully, training consistently, and watching the scale refuse to move, and they’ve landed on the only explanation that seems to fit. Something must be wrong with their metabolism.
It’s an understandable conclusion, and it’s almost never what’s actually happening. The more common situation is stranger, and considerably more fixable. They’ve never measured the thing they’ve been making decisions about. They estimated it, the estimate was off, and nothing in their daily experience could have told them so.
What your resting metabolic rate actually is
Your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the energy your body spends keeping you alive while you do nothing at all. Breathing, circulating blood, holding your temperature steady, repairing tissue, running your brain. It’s the background cost of being a person.
That background cost isn’t a small slice of your day. Resting metabolic rate accounts for roughly 60 to 70 percent of the total energy most people use in a 24 hour period. Exercise, for all the attention it gets, is a much smaller share. Which means if your resting number is wrong in your head, everything you’ve built on top of it is wrong too, and no amount of extra effort at the gym will correct a foundation that was miscalculated.
The calculator is guessing, and it’s usually close
Every app that has ever handed you a daily calorie target arrived at it the same way. It took your height, weight, age, and sex, ran them through a prediction equation, and returned a number with no error bars attached.
The equation most of them use is called Mifflin-St Jeor, and it deserves credit. A 2005 systematic review in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association compared the common prediction equations against measured values and found Mifflin-St Jeor the most reliable of the group, landing within 10 percent of a person’s measured resting metabolic rate in about 82 percent of non-obese adults and about 70 percent of obese adults.
Now read that the other way around. For roughly one in five people, the equation misses by more than 10 percent. For some it misses by considerably more. And there’s nothing in the output to tell you which group you’re in.
This isn’t a flaw in the math so much as a limit of what four variables can capture. Research that accounts for age, sex, fat mass, and fat-free mass still finds something on the order of 15 percent of the variation in resting energy expenditure unexplained. Two people of the same age, sex, height, and weight can genuinely burn different amounts at rest, and no formula yet built reliably predicts which is which.
A 10 percent error doesn’t sound dramatic in isolation. It becomes dramatic when you make the same slightly wrong decision every day for six months and can’t figure out why the results don’t match the plan.
Your metabolism is more stable than you’ve been told
Here’s the part that tends to surprise people most.
In 2021, a research team published an analysis in Science covering more than 6,400 people across 29 countries, ranging in age from eight days to 95 years, measured with doubly labeled water, which is the gold standard for this kind of work. After adjusting for fat-free mass, daily energy expenditure held steady through all of adulthood, from age 20 to age 60. It didn’t begin to decline until after 60.
That adjustment matters, so it’s worth being precise about it. Plenty of people really do burn fewer calories at 50 than they did at 25. But the usual reason isn’t a metabolic engine that quietly wore out. It’s that the composition of the body changed underneath them. Lean tissue is metabolically expensive to maintain. Fat tissue is much cheaper. Lose muscle gradually across two decades, which is easy to do without noticing, and the number goes down accordingly.
That’s a different problem from a broken metabolism, and a far more workable one. It’s also measurable, which is the whole point. Resting metabolic rate and body composition tell a much more complete story together than either does alone.
What a measured number actually changes
An RMR test doesn’t predict anything. It measures. You sit quietly for a few minutes while the system reads the oxygen you consume and the carbon dioxide you produce, and that exchange reveals what your body is actually spending. Not what a formula expects someone your size to spend. What you spend.
Sometimes the result comes back right where the calculator said it would. That’s genuinely useful information, because it rules out the explanation you were worried about and moves the conversation toward something more productive.
Sometimes it comes back meaningfully higher or lower, and several months of confusing, frustrating results suddenly make sense.
And because it’s a real measurement rather than an estimate, you can repeat it. Test now, do the work through the fall and winter, test again in the spring, and you’ll know whether what you’re doing is moving the number in the direction you want. That’s a feedback loop. An app’s estimate can’t give you one, because it will return the same answer next spring regardless of what you did.
None of this is about finding a reason to eat less. It’s about replacing a guess with a fact, so that whatever you decide to do next is built on something real.
Your metabolism is very likely fine. You just haven’t met it yet.
